Cement mixers are used for various construction jobs. The primary function of cement mixers, with its revolving drum is to take cement and mix it with sand and water to form concrete. Cement mixers not only combine these components to make concrete, but also does so homogenously. This then enables construction workers to do their job more efficiently and without any of the usual problems associated with concrete. These Mixers allow construction workers to perform other on-site functions while waiting on the concrete to form.
There are many different types of cement mixers available in a range of capacities and are either electric or engine (diesel or petrol) driven. The size needed would depend upon the type of construction job. Although, the old-fashioned cement truck is still in use, many construction companies now use portable cement mixers instead. These are smaller and provide much more flexibility for builders to do their job. Depending on the type and size of construction site, it can be difficult to manoeuvre a large cement truck, so a smaller version is an excellent alternative.
The actual mixing of cement in cement mixers can be done as dry or wet mixing. Dry mixing starts with an empty mixer. The sand is added first followed by the cement. These are allowed to mix dry for a while before adding water. Water is added carefully until a good consistency of mix is achieved. Wet mixing is a method often used when mixing multiple batches and the cement mixer already contains mixture and water left over from the previous batch.
Without cement mixers, concrete would need to be mixed by hand using a wheelbarrow, which would involve a lot of manpower and sweat mixing the cement, sand and water!
