UTRANAZZ DEVELOPS BESPOKE CONCRETE MIXERS FOR USE ON HONG KONG WEST DRAINAGE TUNNEL PROJECT

Utranazz, the concrete equipment specialist, has developed two unique rough terrain concrete mixers for Dragages-Nishimatsu Joint Venture. The Hydromix 2000 SL Tunnel Mixers were especially designed for use in the construction of the Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel, which is being built to alleviate major flooding.  They are the smallest 2m3 rough terrain concrete mixers to have ever been manufactured measuring just 1600mm in width, 1877mm in height and 5677mm in length.

The design specification for the Hydromix 2000 SL Tunnel Mixers was challenging. They needed to be able to produce 2m3 of concrete but had to comply with strict width and height restrictions (1600mm in width, 1877mm in height) in order to be able to work inside the tunnel. The 4 wheel drive mixers had to be fitted with special Perkins 804D engines equipped with an exhaust purifier and spark arrestor for safe use in confined spaces. Front and rear CCTV was also fitted to give the operator clear vision at all times when driving in the tunnel. The project took Utranazz five months to complete.

The two Hydromix mixers will work at either end of the 11km Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel, which extends from Tai Hang to Cyberport.  They play a vital role in the construction of the tunnel, transporting and delivering concrete and shotcrete at speed, keeping the concrete constantly agitated so that it is delivered fresh to the concrete pumps and concrete spraying machines waiting to line the tunnel walls with concrete.

Notes to editors:

The Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel will intercept storm water collected from mid-levels, and discharge it into the sea directly - thus bypassing the existing drainage systems downstream. This can relieve the discharge load of the existing drainage systems at the low-lying urban areas and improve the overall flood protection standard, minimizing the risk of flooding in Northern Hong Kong Island. The project started in 2007 and is due to be completed in 2012.
